Within the past few years, the treated wood industry has received media attention because of the common use of the chemical preservative CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate). CCA contains Arsenate a naturally occurring form of arsenic. Arsenic is known to be a carcinogen but results regarding the carcinogenic effects of arsenate are inconclusive. To ensure safety of the general population, CCA has been banned for certain applications.
The Environmental Protection Agency and the Wood industry have recently agreed upon voluntary action to stop treating certain materials with CCA. The agreement becomes effective December 31st, 2003. Essentially, the agreement is to stop selling wood treated with CCA if it is primarily destined to for consumers using the wood to build decks, fences, patios, etc. Wood used for commercial building, or marine use, is still treated with CCA.
